Unresolved sexual violence/abuse continues to have a devastating impact on Indigenous peoples around the world.  The trauma and shame that has occurred resulting from colonization & cultural oppression is destroying the very essence of our cultures, our communities and our families.  This trauma, including the historic and intergenerational impacts, has ripped at the spirit of many people and for most, the sexual abuse remains unresolved today.  Unresolved trauma & abuse has many impacts on the individual, the family and the community.  Disconnection with self and others will also be discussed along with ways to restore connection. Its’ effects can particularly be found with survivors of residential schools & subsequent generations.

This workshop will examine the impacts of trauma, sexual violence/abuse, abandonment, shame and unresolved grief by participants understanding awareness and healing processes that will move towards resolving the issues.  Essential to the healing process is culture.  Cultural ceremony, customs and rituals will be discussed as the foundation of healing.  Emphasis will be placed on safety, trust, grief work, self-care and a trauma informed approach as necessary components of the healing process both within the community and healing environments.  Participants will leave the workshop with a greater understanding of sexual violence/abuse, its’ impacts and the necessary ongoing healing steps that can be taken to resolve sexual violence/abuse & shame on the journey to wellness.

Objectives:

  1. To provide a cognitive understanding of sexual violence/abuse and its’ impacts on the individual, the family and the community with a specific emphasis on childhood sexual abuse.
  2. To examine the intergenerational impacts of sexual violence/abuse.
  3. To explore abandonment and shame in relation to the trauma and abuse.
  4. To share healing processes for participants to address the sexual abuse and its’ impacts.
  5. To explore the necessary steps for communities to begin to address sexual violence/abuse.
  6. To discuss and plan with participants the necessary healing steps required for the ongoing resolution of the sexual violence/abuse, abandonment and shame.

It is important to remember, this workshop is a training or education & awareness training as opposed to a healing session.

Staff should, therefore, have dealt with the trauma and sexual abuse in their life as the training will undoubtedly trigger people if they have not dealt with the abuse or trauma.

‘This workshop will address topics related to sexual violence/abuse, which may be distressing or triggering.  We acknowledge the sensitive nature of this subject by having support resources available at the workshop for those who need them.’
