LPS seeking Expressions of Interest from local Indigenous artists
The Lethbridge Police Service is seeking Expressions of Interest from local Indigenous artists for a project that will visually represent the translation of our organizational values into Blackfoot.
The LPS values have been translated into Blackfoot to honour the culture and contributions of the Blackfoot and other Indigenous people in our community, acknowledge the jurisdiction we serve is located on Blackfoot territory and strengthen our relationship with the Blackfoot people.
- Respect – Inakootsiiyssini
- Courage – Iikitapiiysini
- Professionalism – Okamotapotakssini (doing your job right)
- Accountability – Ohkottsstakata (to be able to depend on each other)
- Collaboration – Isspomaanitapiiysinni (helping others)
The successful artist will create a digital work of art that will be displayed within the police station and incorporated into LPS publications to visually represent the Siksikaitsitapi values and foster a greater understanding of the Blackfoot Ways of Being – the foundation of the translation.
The process to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) is open to post-secondary students from the Kainai, Piikani and Siksika First Nations. Eligible artists must be 18 or older and registered as a post-secondary student during the preceding academic semester.
All EOIs will be reviewed by a panel that includes members of the LPS Indigenous Advisory Committee and shortlisted artists will be required to provide one work of art in a digital medium. Once the submissions have been received, one design will be selected and the artist will receive a $500 bursary.
LPS is committed to reconciliation and fostering strong relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities, founded on respect and a shared understanding of history. This initiative was lead by Trissly Blackwater, our 2022-2023 Community Futures Treaty 7 summer student, in partnership with the Police Service and LPS Indigenous Advisory Committee, which is comprised of Kainai and Piikani Elders.
The deadline to submit an Expression of Interest is April 24, 2023. More information about the process, including eligibility, timelines and requirements can be found at: https://lethbridgepolice.bamboohr.com/careers/172
MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Deputy Chief Gerald Grobmeier and Trissly Blackwater will be available for media interviews today at 11:30 a.m. at the police station. This will be the only opportunity for on-camera interviews.
